Carmela Sutera
has earned a reputation as one of New York's preeminent fashion designers. Over the years, her wedding collections have been noted for their delicate fusion of contemporary style, understated elegance and old world sensibility - a creative expression that comes naturally to Sutera.

Born in Italy, the daughter of a successful boutique owner and artist, Sutera arrived in New York at the tender age of eighteen. Before long, she was working in the most respected fashion houses on the East Coast. By 1979, Sutera had found her way into New York's exciting bridal business.

Today, Sutera's gowns are crafted from the finest silks, satins, wools, and laces by a European-trained staff whose workmanship reflects the meticulous manner of Italian couture- but always with real brides in mind. "A bride needs guidance, a sense of styling from someone who knows," explains Sutera, who understands that no two women are alike. "One dress is not good for everyone. A certain personality has to fit each gown." When selecting an appropriate gown, Sutera reminds brides that the silhouette is the key to beauty. For a bride to look stunning, "the dress must be appropriate for her body shape and form," she says.

As we move into the new millennium, Sutera notes that European and Italian fabrics play a large part in bridal fashion. The overall look, she says, is classic Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly.
Sutera cautions brides to begin their search for the perfect wedding gown a year in advance. "Brides should allow time to order fabric, the beading and the embroidery," she says.
